Theron Montgomery Building Renovation

The project sought to transform two existing computer labs on the third level of the campus student center into a presentation space for prospective JSU students, with an adjacent waiting area that would promote recruiting efforts. The fourth level housed the old mail room, with hundreds of student mailboxes in a dark, non-active area of the building; the university wanted to integrate a new electronic self-automated mail system into the space and convert it into student gathering and study space. The tight floor-to-floor heights required creativity in making the space seem open and welcoming, but the project design introduced JSU branding through graphics, lighting, and the finishes palette – with the goal of being engaging but easy to maintain. The client wanted to minimize above-ceiling work, so existing HVAC and fire suppression systems were only minimally impacted.
